Look Up

In our world today, we spend most of our time looking down. Down at our laptops, at our tablets, at the task at hand—and mostly at our phones.

Oh, the danger of staring down at our phones. Our habit of having craned necks staring down is—as dramatic as this may sound—stealing our lives from us. We’re going to know everything about everyone else’s lives and completely miss out on our own in the process.

While I’m scrolling through my Facebook feed looking at pictures of friends’ babies, I might miss my own little boy making a silly face right in front of me.

Or maybe I’m admiring someone else’s sunset photo on Instagram and missing the gorgeous one God has given me in my own backyard.

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about all the things I could be missing by looking down. I believe God wants us to look up more than we do. And He’s given us so many reasons to.

Psalm 19:1 says, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands.”

I can’t look heavenward with my head down. If I want to see His work, His glory—if we want to see God—we must look up.

When I look up, I see my baby laughing.

When I look up, I see what my struggling coworker needs help with.

When I look up, I see my husband’s smile.

When I look up, I see a need.

When I look up, I see my favorite shade of blue in the sky.

So this week, friends, instead of having a strained neck and a tired thumb from scrolling, stop for a moment and raise your head. You might be surprised at what God has right in front of you when you simply look up.
