How to Make Money for What Matters Most to You

You really can make money doing what you love.

I was six months old when my mom started her little bakery. She was 33 with $64 to her name. She went back to something she had always known and loved: making cakes.

Many of you have heard me tell the story before about how she used her gifts and built a business and made an impact. But you know what I don’t usually talk about? Why she started.

Mom didn’t have a burning desire to make cakes one day. The truth is, she had a baby to raise and the drive to simply stay afloat. She needed a way to earn an income. She went into survival mode, and starting a business was her way to make it.

I can’t even imagine how hard it was for her to juggle everything with a new business and a baby. But she did it. I always had everything I needed, from food to field trips to toys, and even a giant trampoline in our backyard. I had everything I ever needed and most of what I wanted growing up.

And all of that was possible because of the money that Mom earned through her business.

One of the most common reasons I hear from women for why they want to start a business is they want to make money for the things they care about the most: For some, it’s their family. For some, it’s a charity. For others, it’s something else that matters to them. Whatever amount of money you want to earn and however you want to use it, it’s up to you.

So, what matters to you? What are you dreaming about? Do you want to pay for Disney or college or an adoption? Or maybe a new house? Or maybe just a date night with your spouse?

Building your own business allows you to chase your dream and pay for those things.

You really can make money doing what you love.
